P3 and PSI scholars toured a farm near Newton, IA that grew corn and soybeans and that contract-raised hogs. We discussed the benefits the farm has reaped from using rye and oats as cover crops – which improve soil health (capturing carbon, holding nitrogen and adding back needed micronutrients) and maintain soil integrity. The farmers also explained the pros and cons of contract-raising livestock compared to owning livestock.
