P3 faculty affiliates, Maria Salas Fernandez & Lie Tang, working to predict crop biomass via 3D point cloud

P3 faculty affiliates Maria Salas Fernandez & Lie Tang collaborated with their teams at Iowa State University to create an automated system for phenotyping sorghum plants.

Their algorithm can segment stems and individual leaves of sorghum plants. This is an important advancement because phenotyping plants by hand is very time-consuming, labor intensive and can result in errors.

Their paper, "Automated morphological traits extraction for sorghum plants via 3D point cloud data analysis" was recently published in the journal Computers and Electronics in Agriculture and will appear in the July issue.
