The Bioinformatics and Computational Biology Graduate Student Organization (BCBGSO) is pleased to announce our annual UNIX and Python workshops.  The primary aim of these workshops is to provide fundamental training in UNIX and Python for use in computational research.  We are offering the following free one-day workshops:

  • Basic UNIX on March 2, 5:30 pm to 8:30
  • Advanced UNIX on March 3, 12:30 pm to 3:30 pm
  • Basic Python on March 23, 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm
  • Advanced Python on March 24, 12:30 pm to 3:30 pm

The Basic UNIX workshop will cover basic topics such navigation through directories, basic file manipulation, basic search tools, basic shell scripting and related material. The Advanced UNIX workshop will cover more advanced topics like search tools, regular expressions, awk and bash scripting with conditionals and loops, and brief introduction to using Condo at ISU.

Register for the UNIX workshops by filling out this form.

The Basic Python workshop will cover fundamentals of Python programming, including Python syntax, loops, functions, and their applications in developing algorithms and text processing.  The Advanced Python workshop will cover modules and packages (using standard libraries), exceptions, text processing using regex, writing multi-threaded code, and other topics. We will send out more information regarding system setup after registration.

Register for the Python workshops by filling out this form.

All workshops will be held in Gilman 2272, which already has Win7 machines; however, participants can bring their own laptops, too.  Once again, the workshops are free, but space is limited to 60 people per session. If you sign up and are later unable to come, please contact either Urminder Singh (usingh@iastate.edu) or Paul Villanueva (pev@iastate.edu) so that room can be made for others as soon as possible.
